The Situation Room Experience

The room is buzzing with energy. News reports are flashing across the screen. The networks are racing for the latest scoop. Confusion and chaos are threatening to spread in the aftermath of a crisis. Someone asks, “What are we going to do?” Now all eyes in the room are fixed on you. This is the Situation Room Experience at the Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush Presidential Libraries. Watch Trailer

In early 2016, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum in Simi Valley, California, asked SenovvA to help design a cutting-edge, interactive learning environment called The Situation Room Experience. This 90-minute simulation challenges high school and university students to manage a fictional international foreign policy crisis, making key governmental decisions and reporting on events as they happen.

Each student plays a role as a member of the White House Crisis Management Team (like the National Security Advisor or the Secretary of State) or as a key member of the media as the crisis unfolds. One of two The Situation Room Experiencehistoric White House Situation Rooms – preserved and reconstructed after a 2007 renovation – serves as the live action backdrop to the fictional crisis.

As technology designer and software developer for this “one-of-a-kind educational gaming environment,” SenovvA joined the library’s project team of education directors, curators, university professors, writers, and Hollywood designers. All were tasked with creating 450 pages of original simulation content, installing up-to-date communications technology into a historic space, identifying the dozens of decisions to be made and the outcomes of each, and filming three hours of original, integrated video to heighten the feeling of realism.

The library notes, “Each student is provided an electronic tablet that outlines their unique role, providing them with critical real-time information that drives their experience. Students make individual and collective decisions that alter the narrative in real time.” The Situation Room ExperienceSenovvA keyed each tablet to an individual role so that it receives role-specific information and allows role-appropriate responses. Students also receive information from four network feeds that feature student-submitted stories. “Their reporting, accurate or not, influences the outcome of the scenario,” the library said.

SenovvA developers created scenarios associated with every variable and every decision, and linked the hand-held devices, computers, video displays, and cameras together for live communication via a closed Local Area Network (LAN). SenovvA carefully imbedded cameras, displays, microphones, and speakers into the historic White House Situation Room, and five media servers were programmed with the simulation’s 75-minute timeline of media content and communications.

“There was no model for the project,” said SenovvA’s Curtis Kelly. The core production team included a writer/game designer, technology integrators and programmers, art director and education director all of whom needed to build an entirely new experience to meet the objectives of the project.”

For the past three years, Samsung and McKinney have trusted SenovvA to deliver their high-profile press conference and product launch showcase at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The event held on January 4, 2017 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. Watch Teaser

SenovvA’s live entertainment producing experience was at full throttle for this year’s event. SenovvA’s team coordinated with multiple subcontractors to construct custom-fabricated scenic elements along with five Samsung 2017 CES Press Conferencedifferent types of automation, which included nine trucks of gear and 100 crew-members. SenovvA was able to fulfill extremely high client expectations and produce a flawless event that showcased the featured products while highlighting the executives launch presentations.

SenovvA’s Marcus Irwin said, “We’re proud of our previous work on Samsung’s CES Press Conferences, and we delivered once again this year. The new Samsung products looked great and the show went extremely well because we have expertise in all the diverse elements that comprised this event.” These elements consisted of meeting traditional live entertainment technical requirements including an automated lighting rig, a complex sound system, and multiple live cameras. In addition, SenovvA met the challenges of working in an environment such as a Las Vegas convention venue where the effective coordination of sharing loading dock space and local resources with other concurrent events is the difference between success and failure

SenovvA’s ongoing expertise in live entertainment Samsung 2017 CES Press Conferenceprovided that Samsung’s Press Conference incorporated a live webcast viewed by over 700,000 people, highlighting five top executives, while unveiling a wide range of new innovations in a 45-minute no holds barred show. This was complete with moving scenery, integrated video, and precision theatrical timing.

“We’re frequently called on for our technical expertise,” said SenovvA’s Vice President Arianna Knapp. “Samsung needed our leadership and management skills at the same time. We collaborated with McKinney and then coordinated the plan with our trusted technical partners to accomplish the required objectives while managing the big picture. This event demanded the commitment and consistency we continually provide to get the job done right.”

Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project

Planned Parenthood Los Angeles (PPLA) held their annual fundraiser at the Pacific Design Center on October 6th, 2016 in West Hollywood, at Spectra by Wolfgang Puck. SenovvA has proudly been supporting this charity for over 10 years with professional, top-notch production staff and equipment at a reduced cost. SenovvA Project Manager Chris Veluz said, “The idea is to put more of the money into PPLA’s work and less into the production of the fundraiser. But the quality of the production still has to be world-class. That’s where we come in.”

SenovvA provided audio, video and projection equipment/support for the annual fundraiser. Partnered with Mastermind Production Group for audio and lighting to make Tony – and Grammy – nominated artist, Sara Bareilles’s live stage performance stand out. Slide presentations along with prepared videos complemented Planned Parenthood Advocacy Projectthe presenters as they addressed a room full of entertainment industry executives and professionals. “We wanted to insure all production elements would meet the high standards of SenovvA and exceed client expectations,” stated Chris.

In addition to supporting PPLA’s efforts through his work with SenovvA, Chris is also a personal supporter of the organization, and that made the evening extra meaningful for him. Chris shares, “There was so much passion in the room – a lot of fire! Planned Parenthood is on the front lines everyday and you could feel how much everyone cared.”

SenovvA Vice President Arianna Knapp explained, “Part of SenovvA’s culture is recognizing that our leadership and staff have a desire to contribute to important causes. We do that with our specialized support in a number of arenas, with organizations championing HIV/AIDS research, support for people living with HIV/AIDS, arts and culture, education in the Los Angeles communities where we are located, and Planned Parenthood.”

Veteran Executive Producer Don Mischer of Don Mischer Productions selected SenovvA, to provide display expertise services for the Grand Opening Dedication Ceremony of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC on September 24, 2016. Frank McMinn, President, SenovvA asserted, “ Don has a long history producing programs of the highest profile… whether it’s a special event involving the President of the United States, The Emmy’s, The Oscars or the Super Bowl Halftime Show…. he and his team are the best in the business and we’re always ready to support them.”

NMAAHC Grand Opening Dedication CeremonyThe overall set design, created by Steve Bass, included 125 tiles of the new Oracle 5.9mm LED to construct three on-stage displays. The SenovvA team worked with a top-flight coalition of scenic, lighting and sound providers to realize Steve Bass’ design in collaboration with Art Director, Alana Billingsley. It is this proclivity toward collaboration that makes SenovvA the go-to choice for the precise world of live broadcast television, and newsworthy events such as this.

The event featured the museum building; designed by the architectural team of Freelon Group, Adjaye Associates, Davis Brody Bond and SmithGroup as the backdrop for the ceremony. The widely held anticipation of its unveiling was felt throughout the city capping off a number of events celebrating the momentous occasion.

Production planning for the grand opening started month’s prior with collaboration between Mischer and the SenovvA team, planning the integration of LED to compliment the unique architecture of the building. DMP (Don Mischer Productions) contacted Frank McMinn in early July to begin evaluating options for the creative design. AAHC Grand Opening Dedication CeremonyWhen Alana Billingsley requested demos in the shop in order to integrate the physical tiles with the custom walls, the team then assembled at SenovvA’s LA headquarters with the Producers/Art Director to create the mock-up.

SEGD 2016 Xplorer Digital Bootcamp

SenovvA was a proud sponsor and thrilled to host SEGD’s Digital Foundations Bootcamp at their Los Angeles Headquarters. This was the annual “Xplorer” event that focused on digital workflow and practices in the experiential graphic design field. The audience was SEGD team members looking to gain insight and skills in the digital design processes, as EGD makes the transformation of adopting digital workflow and practices. Members of SEGD are responsible for the visual graphic design of everything from signage to experiential public spaces.

The Xplorer event was largely a matter of coordinating various speakers along with their technology needs for their presentations. SenovvA and her sister entity INVENT, strategized together to create a meeting space for the day’s activities. Thus utilizing the SEGD 2016 Xplorer Digital Bootcamppresentation, lighting and audio systems of the schoolroom environment and consuming both classrooms of INVENT for breakout sessions. SenovvA not only helped organize, staff, and provide half the featured speakers for this event, we further sponsored refreshments for the post-show mixer.

SenovvA collaborated with Shy Fi Productions and the various speaker organizations to provide gear and resources for the presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on sessions. The uniqueness of this event is that it was all digital and focused on trends in digital visual/experiential graphic design. SenovvA’s P. Michael Anderson delivered a warp-speed presentation on Developing Digital Content along with Lauren Kelly Sheridan who prepared an insightful session on Designing with Code. “SenovvA was a valuable asset in helping create the built-in production space,” states P. Univision Upfront 2016

Univision Communications Inc., a leading media company serving Hispanic America, held its annual Upfront presentation for advertisers at the Lyric Theatre in New York City on Tuesday, May 17, 2016.

SenovvA brought its experience and technology to the pivotal event for the mission-driven media company under the guidance of Producer, Bob Holmes. Univision is a welcome addition to a long list of SenovvA’s Network Upfront clients over the past 10 years.

Univision Upfront 2016The SenovvA team was led by Project Manager, Robert Ingram, brought approximately 1000 square feet of LED (including 300 tiles of 3mm Black Onyx, and over 300 tiles of Everbrighten 5mm) to the event. Multiple d3 media servers pushed-out the expansive LED content along with a top-notch camera crew, operating Sony HDC2500 cameras, that fed the new Clark Media broadcast truck through IMAG and Webstream.

The audio support package included a Yamaha CL5 desk FOH and a second one for monitors. SenovvA also provided an audio playback, foldback monitor package, as well as 40 channels of wireless microphones and wireless in-ear monitors. All audio elements were incorporated into the existing house sound system for Paramour with the help of the Local One IATSE sound department.

“The unique pixel space didn’t conform to traditional content expectations, and our programmer, Peter Acken, rose to the challenge by utilizing d3 technologies,” said Rob Ingram “New content clips were delivered to our content manager, Grant McDonald throughout the process, adding new content right up to the last minute before show time.”

The Lyric Theatre in New York City is the second Univision Upfront 2016largest Broadway Theater, seating over 1900 and currently home to Cirque Du Soleil’s Paramour. Navigating the stage’s transformation for the Univision presentation required resource coordination and the cooperation of the Local One IATSE stagehands union.
